Memories of an Island at War - Youtube Launch Watchalong (Online Only)

Memories of an Island at War goes live on Youtube on Thursday 22nd at 20.00. If you'd like to join us online for a watchalong party, please feel free!

This unique film, made by Filmmaker Alasdair Satchel brings together the voices and memories of Mull, weaving an evocative portrait of the island during wartime and the years that followed VE Day. Archival footage and photographs are interlaced with new images created in our workshop, grounding the history in both past and present.

At the heart of the project are the voices of community members themselves. Their testimonies bring to life the everyday realities of post and wartime Mull: the challenges of rationing, the impact of separation, the moments of joy and solidarity that carried people through. These stories are not just remembered, but reimagined for a new generation, creating a living archive that honours the island’s shared national heritage.

Alasdair Satchel of What We Do In The Winter and Struthach Productions, who was commissioned to make the film on behalf of An Tobar and Mull Theatre and Future Arts Centres said:

I'm delighted to be able to share Memories of an Island at War on Youtube.
I can't wait to hear how the stories that folk shared with us connect with other people.
It's so important to have the voices of our islands shared on the world's stage, adding depth and human perspectives to somewhere that so many see as just a wonderful holiday location.
The film brings back to life a moment when people from our islands went out into the world to help others in their time of greatest need.
They fought to bring an end fascism and oppressive right-wing regimes.
They fought for people they had never met before, defending their freedoms with the hope that no one would ever have to fight like that again.
Theirs is a story that our current political climate has so much to learn from.
It is an honour to be able to share these stories.
