On Sonorous Seas Beach Performances: Calgary Bay

  • Calgary Bay Calgary, Scotland, PA75 6QQ United Kingdom (map)

Join Iona artist Mhairi Killin and friends as they gather on the beach for an event bringing together science, music and poetry, to commemorate the 2018 strandings of 45 beaked whales around the Hebrides.

Part of the On Sonorous Seas project, commissioned by An Tobar and Mull Theatre and in partnership with the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, the afternoon will include: a performance by project composer and musician Fergus Hall, with vocals by Scottish Opera mezzo soprano Lea Shaw; a reading of the commissioned poem, Ossuary, by Mull-based artist Miek Zwamborn; talks by the Scottish Association for Marine Science and Tobermory-based Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust; and time for tea, cake and conversation about On Sonorous Seas, and the 2018 event which inspired Mhairi to create this multi-disciplinary project.

The On Sonorous Seas exhibition is at An Tobar until Sunday 28 August.

Meet at the Calgary Bay car park. Thereafter at Calgary Arts. Participants can either take the ten minute woodland walk from the beach to Calgary Arts, which involves some slightly steep sections and uneven ground, or can drive.

Please note that the venue at Calgary Arts is upstairs with no lift. (In the event of wet weather, the event will take place at Calgary Arts.)

Tickets are Pay What You Decide. 50 percent of the proceeds will go to the HWDT.

Booking is essential as numbers are limited.
