The Big Red Monster

In 2024/5, the Storybus traveled around the entire island capturing many beautiful tales of island folklore from people of all ages. These stories were recorded through performances, recordings, writings, photographs, drawings, and song.

The Big Red Monster was one of these stories and stood out as being a fantastic collaboration between all of the kids across the island. We now celebrate the work that they did by sharing it with everyone!

THE BIG RED MONSTER

There once was a monster 

Big and red 

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He walked around town 

On long, gangly legs 

He pulled down the washing lines 

And ate all the pegs 

There once was a monster 

Big and red 

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He went to the park 

And chased all the dogs 

He kicked over the flowers 

And devoured the frogs 

There once was a monster 

Big and red 

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He went to the Co-op 

To do his weekly shop 

He gobbled one of the managers legs 

So all he could do was hop 

There once was a monster  

Big and red 

He has a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He travelled on the ferry 

And frightened all the crew 

He ran around the boat and loudly shouted BOO!

There once was a monster 

Big and red  

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He called at Ulva School to see the Good and Naughty kids 

He put the teachers in the bins and tightly shut the lids 

He tossed the children into space 

Slipped on a banana skin and fell on his face 

There once was a monster  

Big and red 

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

In Dervaig school he stormed the yard 

The kids linked arms and formed a guard 

The headteacher screamed and ran away 

The kids fought back, won and shouted HOORAY!

There once was a monster 

Big and red 

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He came along to story class 

And rolled upon his tum 

The children tried to tickle him 

He ran and fell on his bum 

There once was a monster 

Big and red 

He had a massive belly 

And a little tiny head 

He gobbled all the biscuits 

And drank all the juice 

He hid and ran as fast as he could 

And now he’s on the loose 

We need to find this monster 

Big and red 

With his massive belly 

And his little tiny head 

We really need to find him 

As he will cause a fuss 

We really need to find him 

And lock him in our bus
